Q: [Do I need a large 4WD for towing? ]
A: [It
depends on how heavy the load that you are intending to tow. Large
Aussie six cylinder cars will tow quite well - a late model Falcon
wagon is rated at 2300 kg maximum weight which is well above the
usual 18 ft caravan. But for really large vans or loads, you might
need the added weight, grunt and fuel consumption of a large 4X4.
]
Q: [Do I need a special tow bar for my
caravan?]
A: [Most definitely! Light weight towbars are
suitable for small jobs - like taking the occasional trailer load to
the dump or a light load of soil etc. - not serious towing. We
recommend Hayman Reese hitches because they are a quality product,
tested and stamped with their towing capacities. While other bars
are available, none come up to the standards that Hayman Reese has
set.
Q:[Where do I get some advice on what I need for my towing job?]
A:[ There are many sites listed on the web and there are some useful links on this page. For personal service why not call in and see the friendly, professional staff at Maitland Auto Parts? They will set you on the right path for safe and efficient towing.
Q.[
What is ball weight? ]
A.[
Ball weight is the load imposed on the towing vehicles tow ball when
the caravan or trailer is connected to the tow vehicle. For further
information check our
Towing page and refer to the caravan and tow
vehicle's manuals.]
Q.
[What is ATM/GTM/TARE MASS?]
A.
ATM – aggregate trailer mass – is the total laden weight of the
trailer which includes the payload (e.g. water, gas, clothes,
cutlery, crockery etc). The ATM is specified by the manufacturer
and must not be exceeded.
GTM – gross trailer mass – is the total allowable mass including
whatever you add as payload that can be supported by the wheels.
TARE MASS – is the unladen mass of the caravan or trailer.
Q.
[What towing equipment do I need?]
A.
[Towing mirrors, electric brake controller and load levelling
equipment are essential. It is important to match equipment with
your towing combination and it is important to buy quality
products.]
Q.
[What are the laws regarding caravan or trailer towing?]
A.
[The laws vary from state to state. Most caravans and trailers have
a manufacturing plate outlining TARE/ATM/GTM weights. These must be
followed to ensure you are legal. Vehicle manufactures give a towing
capability which must also be adhered to. If you have a
classic van or a vehicle which does not have a manufacturers
recommended towing capacity, then as a rule of thumb the vehicle may
tow up to one and a half times it’s unladen mass provided the
caravan or trailer has brakes. Check with RTA - be sure and be
safe!]
